Literacy Course Information/Syllabus
In Literacy Class you will be able to:
- Demonstrate increased confidence, persistence, and personal responsibility for your learning.
- Analyze, evaluate, and make connections between and among different texts, and relate those texts to your life and the lives of others.
- Demonstrate the ability to use the writing process within writer’s workshops.
- Use writing as a tool for thinking, for communicating, for interpreting literature, and for constructing personal meaning.
- Participate in formal and informal presentations and discussions.
ATTENDANCE & TARDIES:
If you are absent from class, it’s up to you to get the work you missed. In class this year, most daily tasks and assignments will be posted in the class Google Classroom. If you miss class, it is up to you to go to the Google Classroom page to see what you missed. Always feel free to email me with questions AFTER you have looked at the daily tasks in Google Classroom. Most assignments are due the day after they are assigned, by 9:00 am. I will accept revisions on medium to large assignments and assessments. Students should email me to discuss the revisions and when they are due.
*If you are late to class (5 minutes) you will be marked tardy.
BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS:
All students are expected to behave in a way that makes the class a safe, positive, and productive learning environment. While we obviously need procedures to assure a productive learning environment, I believe misbehavior is an opportunity for growth and learning as well. Our class expectations are:
- Be Kind
- Be Respectful
- Work Hard
Assignments and Missing/Late Work:
Your goal should be to turn in 100% of your assignments. They should be completed to the best of your ability and turned in on time. Staying organized with your planner will help you be successful throughout the day. All 6 Central students will be required to complete a paper planner each day, which will be checked in Pack time by your Pack teacher.
When grades are entered in Powerschool, there are color codes to indicate if an assignment is missing or incomplete. All assignments turned in late will be marked late, but no points will be deducted.
As the year progresses, the standards and requirements for assignments will increase. I will communicate those changes at the beginning of each quarter.
GRADES AND ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignment Categories:
- Prep work/Practice: These assignments serve as preparation for class discussion or activity, and/or preparation of a piece of work for peer or teacher feedback. These are almost always due the day after they are assigned. Revisions are not accepted on these assignments.
- Class Assignments: Assignments will be given in class on a regular basis. These are generally more involved than the small, daily tasks, and carry a heavier weight in the grade book. Revisions are accepted on these assignments if completed within the provided window of time. If you want the opportunity to revise, you need to email me, and we will discuss the requirements for your revisions.
- Assessments: Summative assessments show mastery of learning that has already taken place. After a skill or content standard has been introduced, practiced, and studied, you will demonstrate your understanding through a summative assessment or performance event. Examples of summative assessments include unit tests and quizzes, book projects, and final writing pieces. You may have the opportunity to retake or resubmit a summative assessment after conferencing or reviewing with me. Projects usually take more than a few days to complete, and are therefore worth more points than daily assignments. I will help you make a plan to complete long-term projects in chunks so you don’t get overwhelmed.
