Learning a foreign language is an exciting way of understanding, relearning, and renaming the world around us and viewing it through a new cultural perspective. In all the modern language classes, from the beginning, we teach through a blend of activities that mirrors the six strands of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines by which the National Standards are measured. These guidelines are comprehensibility, comprehension, language control, vocabulary use, communication strategies, and cultural awareness. The goal at all levels is to build on and refine, in a systematic manner, what has already been learned. Ultimately, the students will internalize the language and use it as a tool to communicate sensitively and spontaneously with others.
