• Here are a few of the questions that come up fairly frequently in the process.

My child is a freshman, but he is fluent. Can he just apply for the Seal of Biliteracy now?

This process is only open to seniors. He should definitely apply when he is a senior!

Can a student earn the Seal of Biliteracy in a language that isn't taught at CHS?

Absolutely! In our first few years in the program, students have earned the Seal of Biliteracy in German, Portuguese, Dutch, Bosnian and Korean. We look forward to adding more languages to our list.

How do students prove proficiency in a language that isn't taught at CHS?

Most students will take the AAPPL exam in their respective language. However, we do have access to alternative exams for languages that aren't offered on the AAPPL.

What about students who earned a qualifying score on an AP Language & Culture exam or on the AAPPL when they were sophomores? Can they use that score to qualify?

Not at this time. It is a state requirement that the world language proficiency test be taken in the junior or senior year. That is not something we can override. Those students who scored high when they were sophomores will need to sign up to be tested again in their senior year.

Whom does one contact to get answers to questions about the Seal of Biliteracy at CHS?

Students can ask a World Language teacher, drop by the World Languages & Cultures office (room 136), or email the department chair (currently elizabethcaspari@claytonschools.net). Parents should simply email the department chair. If a call is preferred, please provide your number and a good time to call.
