Mock Trial Team Named State Champions

image The Clayton High School Mock Trial Team has earned the title of the Missouri Mock Trial State Champions for the first time since 2013. The eight-member team competed in five rounds of the 2019 State Championship Tournament held on March 29-31 at the Eastern Jackson County Courthouse in Independence, Missouri. Based on their first place finish, the CHS students and coaches will advance to the 2019 National High School Mock Trial Championship held in May in Athens, Georgia.

More than 600 students from schools across Missouri participate in the Missouri High School Mock Trial Competition each year. The mock trials are structured like real courtroom trials and follow the same rules and procedures, giving students the opportunity to learn firsthand how the legal system works and what role judges, lawyers, juries and witnesses play in the court system. The competition also helps students develop and improve their public speaking and critical thinking skills.

Congratulations to the following students and their coaches, CHS Journalism Teacher Justin Seiwell and parent volunteers Mike Wetmore, Karen Wetmore and Omri Praiss.
