Mock Trial Debates Use of Violence to Overcome Imperialism

Clayton High School sophomores spent time during their World and U.S. History II classes on March 1 and 2 debating the question of whether or not it is acceptable to use violence to gain independence. Through a mock trial simulation, students took the side of the prosecution or the defense, arguing the trial of Kenya’s fictitious Mau Mau rebel group and its use of violence to end British imperialism in the 1950s.

Students took on the role of prosecution and defense attorneys or witnesses for either side. The three-member jury carefully listened to the opening and closing arguments and the examination of the witnesses before making their determination on the outcome of the trial.
