MJEA Names Erin Castellano Teacher of the Year

MJEA Award Photo The Missouri Journalism Education Association (MJEA) has named Clayton High School Journalism Teacher Erin Castellano the 2016-2017 Teacher of the Year. Castellano was presented with the award and a $500 check from Lifetouch, the sponsor of the MJEA Teacher of the Year award, on May 8.

CHS Journalism Teacher Marci Pieper nominated Castellano.

“A good teacher can instruct students how to write well. A great teacher will teach them about how their words affect others and that their writing can have consequences,” said Pieper. “She spends a great deal of time discussing ethics and training her students to be leaders.”

Castellano currently serves as the state director of the National Journalism Education Association, and she was recently recognized as a runner-up for the 2016-2017 Diversity Award.

The MJEA is the largest state scholastic journalism organization formed to help protect and enhance scholastic journalism in Missouri. MJEA works to provide outreach and support to advisers and journalism programs across the state. MJEA supports free and responsible scholastic journalism by providing resources and educational opportunities, by promoting professionalism, by encouraging and rewarding student excellence and teacher achievement, and by fostering an atmosphere which encompasses diversity yet builds unity.
