Meramec Staff Shave Their Heads to Fight Childhood Cancer
In conjunction with the school’s annual celebration of World Kindness Day, Meramec Elementary students, staff and parents partnered with Captain Elementary to host their own fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the American Cancer Society in honor of students in the District who have fought and continue to fight childhood cancer. If the school successfully met its goal of $3,000, Meramec Third-Grade Teacher Matt Chaney agreed to have his head shaved in a school-wide assembly. Through dress up days and Penny Wars, the Meramec community not only met its goal, but also far surpassed it by raising $8,880! As a result, two other Meramec staff members, P.E. Teacher Patrick Flynn and Kid Zone Coordinator Tyler Kearns, both agreed to have their heads shaved as well.
Principal Lisa Jackson-Terry and Meramec’s Principal for the Day, third-grader Taylor Flotken, had the privilege of shaving the three staff members’ heads during a school-wide assembly on Wednesday, Nov. 9.
