Elementary Spanish FAQs
How often will my child attend Spanish class?
All classes, 1st-5th , have Spanish 3 times per week for 30 minutes. (5th grade strings students will have fewer Spanish classes.)
What is taught during class?
Please see the curriculum overview page for an overview of the program and the units covered.
Will my child be fluent at the end of the program?
Fluency is not the goal of the Elementary Spanish Program. Students are expected to be able to talk about themselves, their family, their likes and dislikes, and describe everyday items by the end of elementary Spanish. We will focus on listening, speaking, writing, and cultural experiences. Classes are taught in Spanish and students are encouraged to speak in Spanish as often as possible. The curriculum often reinforces what students are learning in Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies.
What can I do to help my child learn at home?
Taking a few minutes a week to ask about Spanish class, review homework or other materials sent home, and encouraging your child to do his or her best will send a message that learning another language is important to you. My website also links to fun, computer-based games to play and other ways to extend learning.
What is the homework policy and expectation?Every grade level has a homework calendar once per month that needs to be completed, signed and returned. Answers are provided on the back. We will go over the homework in class. Additional copies of the homework calendars can be found on my website. First, access the district website www.claytonschools.net. Go to schools, click on Captain,go to teachers, and click on Specialist – Lorie Madriz - Spanish. You can download the calendars and print them as needed.
Other homework assignments include having your son/daughter read to, present to, or teach you Spanish. Homework provides students with the opportunity to practice Spanish outside of class and keeps parents updated about what we are studying.
What if I don’t speak any Spanish?
Although you may not feel confident checking your child’s work, you can learn a little Spanish and have fun finding out what your child knows!
