    Seventh-Grade Social Studies Learning Objectives

     

    Seventh grade social studies is an exploration of the history, culture, economy, government, and current events of the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. 


    Major Themes:

    1. “We the People”

    2. The Role of Government

    3. The Role of the United States in the World

    4. Social and Economic Change

    Essential Questions:

    1. Who are “We the People of the United States” and how has the nation’s population and culture changed since 1900?

    2. What is the purpose and role of government? What are the people and ideas that have shaped those roles?

    3. How has the role of the United States in the world changed between the late 1800s and today?

    4. How has American society and the United States’ economy changed over time?

    Essential Skills:

    1. Research using a variety of sources

    2. Practice media literacy: evaluating sources for bias, perspective, and reliability

    3. Make connections between the past and current events

    4. Explain how society has changed over time

    Units:

    1. The US as a World Power
      The United States transitioned into a world power that claimed territory around the world and became involved in the World War I and II.

    2. Boom and Bust
      The economy, government, and culture of the United States changed dramatically during the 1920s and 30s.

    3. The Cold War
      In a post-World War II world, the United States foreign and domestic policy was shaped by global American influence.

    4. Civil and Human Rights
      American society changed through the efforts of many to try and expand legal and cultural equality in the United States. 

    5. Modern America
      Students will use our major themes as a lens to explore the last 50 years of the United States.
