GLN Students Learn About Inclusivity and Creativity from New Art Mural
Glenridge Elementary students were in awe as they saw local STL artist, Cbabi Bayoc, paint a new mural for their school. The water-themed mural set in nature is filled with students of different backgrounds, positive messages, and various animals.
“The mural is incredibly eye-catching,” said Amy Oliver, GLN Art Teacher. “It's not only full of bold color and fun patterns, but Cbabi does an amazing job at representing and celebrating different races, ethnicities and genders.”
Students were able to see Bayoc painting through the six day process and ask him questions about the mural. They were encouraged to try new creative pursuits and believe in their ability to be an artist.
Messages encouraging students to be their best in the mural include: “Have Patience,” “What Looks Easy, Started Off Hard,” “Isn't It Cool We All Fly Differently?” and “Choose Kind” Glenridge’s school motto.
“It’s about watching the process happen,” said Bayoc. “I don't think enough students see artists in action, they just see a finished product.”
Bayoc values the representation of students of different backgrounds in his work and wanted the mural to be encouraging for students who are often not represented in art.
“Every single child should feel seen, accepted and celebrated,” said Oliver. “School, of all places, needs to be an environment where anyone who is part of the community feels a sense of belonging.”
