Join us for Courageous Conversations!
The School District of Clayton’s elementary schools are partnering this school year to host a three-part series for elementary parents titled, “Courageous Conversations: Staying Curious about our Community.” Through this series, Phil Hunsberger from Educational Equity Consultants will help us:
- unpack our identities;
- strive for global awareness;
- celebrate the cultural and ethnic diversity within our schools; and
- deepen our collective ability to create, maintain and sustain school cultures that value inclusivity.
Please join us for as many of the following sessions as your schedule will allow. Each session will be held from 6:30-8 p.m. with heavy appetizers provided. Please make childcare arrangements now to join us for these adult-only events. Click here to RSVP.
Monday, Nov. 25, at Captain Elementary: The second session will examine the five attributes of belonging (safety, value, power, dignity and self-actualization). Attendees will have the opportunity to explore their own needs regarding these attributes and, through conversations with each other, learn how others’ needs are different than their own.
Monday, Feb. 3, at Meramec Elementary: The third and final session will include a deeper dive into the topic of oppression, helping attendees gain a shared language on the subject while teaching them to recognize the institutionalized manner in which oppression is created and supported.
We hope you will make plans to attend these important events in our school communities.
Monday, Oct. 28, at Glenridge Elementary: The first session will focus on the danger of a single story and how it relates to the cycle of socialization and unconscious bias. Parents will learn ways in which they can offer their children counternarratives to the stereotype narratives they may experience.
