Dr. Sheila Powell-Walker

I am absolutely delighted to be joining the School District of Clayton's learning community!  I serve as the School Social Worker for both Wydown Middle School and Clayton High School. I am a mother of 5 wonderful children, 4 boys and 1 girl.  Prior to entering the world of education, I worked at ECHO Children's Home, Hopewell Community Mental Health Center and Life Skills Foundation. While working for these agencies, I learned a great deal about assessment, intervention planning and community engagement.  After completing my degree in Professional Counseling, I joined the educational team at Thurgood Marshall Academy as a Professional School Counselor.  I would later accept a position in the Riverview Gardens School District where I remained for 14 years, serving as a Professional School Counselor, School Social Worker and Coordinator (Intervention Team and Provider Services).

I have been afforded the opportunity to facilitate professional learning at a number of state and national education conferences (Missouri Alternative Education Conference, National Character Plus Conference, National Alternative Education Conference, Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals Conference). I am also an adjunct professor with Lindenwood University.  I was recently nominated to receive the 2017 Dr. John M. Anderson Mental Health Award, an award given by the St. Louis County Children's Service Fund each year.  Although I was not selected this year, it was indeed an honor to be nominated and acknowledged for the work I have done in public education to make meaningful connections between social and emotional well-being and student success.  As I begin my career in Clayton, I am committed to working, collaboratively, with students, parents, school personnel and the community toward ensuring equitable access for all learners.
