World Languages Wins National Award

Student in world languages classroom with book

The School District of Clayton has been named a recipient of a national award from Klett World Languages and the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), recognizing excellence and innovation in language program design.

As one of only two districts selected nationwide, the award highlights Clayton’s efforts to reimagine language learning through innovative curriculum, cross-curricular connections and culturally responsive teaching practices that strengthen students’ communication skills and promote global awareness.

In Clayton, students begin learning Spanish in first grade, with a focus on building cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. As they progress, students have opportunities to expand their skills through advanced coursework and may ultimately earn the Seal of Biliteracy. The program is among the strongest in the region, with nearly 25% of the Class of 2026 earning the Seal—an achievement that reflects years of sustained study and real-world language use.

“We’re proud of the program we’ve built and the inclusive environment we strive to create for our students,” said Michael Crowell, EdD, world languages and cultures curriculum coordinator. “Those values come to life in our classrooms as we provide rich learning experiences that foster cultural understanding and prepare students to thrive in an interconnected world.”

As an award recipient, the District will receive $1,000 to support continued development of its world languages program.
