Equity and Student Services

This department oversees a broad range of programs that support student success, working to ensure that diversity, equity and inclusion are, and remain, at the center of the work we do at the School District of Clayton. From managing the strategy around staff development related to issues of equity, anti-bias, and anti-racism to consulting on major initiatives from teaching and learning to school operations and youth development, this person will serve as a trusted advisor to many leaders in the District. The School District of Clayton’s School Counseling program focuses on teaching students the competencies that are critical to their continued social, emotional and academic growth and development. Through regular, planned activities led by the District’s professionally certified guidance counselors, students learn about career planning and exploration, knowledge of self and others, and educational and vocational development. School social workers are trained mental health professionals who provide services related to a person’s social, emotional and life adjustment to school and/or society. The school social workers in Clayton serve as liaisons for teachers, administrators, parents and students between school, home and community agencies for the purpose of improving the overall learning experience for children. Learn more about the Social Work Program.

The School District of Clayton's Health Services Program strives to advance the academic success, well-being and lifelong achievement of its students. Health Services facilitates positive student responses to normal development, promotes health and safety, intervenes with actual and potential health problems and provides case management services. The formal District Gifted Program, approved by the Clayton Board of Education and the State of Missouri, begins in second grade. The goals of the District Gifted Program are to ensure a transparent, fair and equitable gifted identification process, to provide an environment that enriches and develops talent and to foster an understanding of a strong sense of self and of one’s unique capabilities.  
 
As stated in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Guidelines for Gifted Programs, a gifted program is: “not designed for the typical superior student who is frequently an excellent scholar, can earn 'A' grades, and achieve academic honors. The educational needs of these students should be met by existing school programs. . . . [A gifted program is] reserved for the students who are as far from the superior student in potential as the superior is from the average student. The task is to identify these students and to provide educational opportunities that will challenge and develop their abilities.”
