Holi Events Celebrate Indian Culture, Arrival of Spring
The recent snowy March weather didn’t chill the Glenridge Elementary celebration of Holi, the Indian holiday commemorating the end of winter and the triumph of good over evil. Glenridge students, staff and parents took part in several Holi celebrations throughout the week of March 6, kicking off with an assembly on Tuesday, March 7, and concluding with a Color Run on Sunday, March 12.
The Holi assembly gave Glenridge students the opportunity to share their Indian culture and heritage with their school community through several dances and narration. During the assembly, the entire school learned a dance to the Bollywood song, “Jai Ho.” In addition to the kickoff assembly, students spent time learning about and creating their own Indian artwork and practiced yoga during their P.E. classes. They also had the opportunity to try an Indian-inspired lunch prepared by Chartwells in the school’s cafeteria.
The week’s Holi celebration concluded with a color run on March 12 to mark the beautiful colors of spring. Participants walked and ran twice around the school block as they were splashed with colored powder by event volunteers. In the school’s gym, they enjoyed Indian snacks, music and activities. A color explosion on the school’s play field served as the event’s finale.
The Holi celebration was part of the PTO-sponsored Merge of Cultures event series this year, which highlights the different cultures that comprise the school’s diverse community. Parent co-chairs Sonia Shahrawat and Viji Vanukuru partnered with Glenridge staff members to coordinate and implement the event. Previous Merge of Cultures events this year have included Taste of the World, Hispanic Heritage Month, Chinese New Year and Black History Month.
