Meramec Kicks Off Fruit and Veggie Challenge
Meramec Elementary students and staff kicked off their MyPlate Fruit and Vegetable Challenge during the week of Jan. 15, competing against seven other schools from as close as Glenridge Elementary to as far away as Haiti to see who can eat the most servings of fruits and vegetables over a two-week period. The MyPlate Challenges encourage healthy eating in all of the food groups and physical activity through friendly competition. Currently, students are learning about how fruits and vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet.
In conjunction with the MyPlate Challenges, Meramec has partnered with Chartwells, the District’s food service provider, to host “Try-Days” throughout the school year for students to taste-test foods they might not eat on a regular basis. On Jan. 16, students had the opportunity to try edamame during their lunch period, and it was a hit!
The Meramec Garden Club has been an integral part of promoting the MyPlate Challenges throughout their school this year, making healthy eating posters for the cafeteria and posting information about each challenge. Additionally, the members have had the opportunity to do a pre-taste of each Try-Day food during their Garden Club meetings.
