Diversity in Action Event Facilitates Learning, Discussion
Captain Elementary parents, students and staff took part in an evening of storytelling and powerful discussion during the school’s Diversity In Action (DIA) event held on Tuesday, March 13. The Captain community has been participating in open conversations about race and racism this year through its DIA program with the goal of creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable school community.
The March 13 event kicked off with popular storyteller Mama Lisa sharing her story, “A Better Free!” with attendees. The adults then moved to the library for a discussion facilitated by Captain parent Laura Horwitz and Adelaide Lancaster from We Stories, an organization that uses children’s literature to create conversation, change and hope in the St. Louis area. The discussion was designed to help parents understand the importance of and strategies for talking about race with their children.
While parents and staff took part in their discussion, students listened to Mama Lisa’s story, “Anansi the Spider.”
Before and after the event, DIA attendees had the opportunity to peruse a book fair sponsored by local bookstore EyeSeeMe. This store serves as a resource for parents, teachers and schools by offering children’s books that promote positive images and stories about African American culture.
