Students Make their Mark on International Dot Day
In classrooms, down the halls and in the cafeteria, dots could be sighted just about everywhere at Glenridge Elementary School on Friday, Sept. 16. Students and staff proudly donned their best dot clothing, enjoyed dot-shaped lunches and took part in dot-themed class lessons in celebration of International Dot Day and the anniversary of Peter H. Reynolds' book, “The Dot.” Glenridge joined schools around the world in a symbolic celebration of creativity, courage, perseverance and the willingness to explore possibilities.
“The Dot” tells the story of a caring teacher who reaches a reluctant student in a remarkably creative way. In Reynolds’ book, the teacher dares a resistant student to “make her mark.” The student’s breakthrough begins with a simple dot on a piece of paper but evolves into a journey of self-discovery, where her creativity blooms and she becomes an inspiration for others.

Each year, Glenridge students revisit “The Dot” and are reminded to “just make their mark and see where it will take them.” International Dot Day reinforces the meaning behind this phrase and encourages students to celebrate their own creativity as they learn about themselves and inspire others.
