Wydown Eighth-Graders Walk for Water
The eighth-graders on Team 7/8 took the lessons learned from their Humanity and the Environment unit in social studies class and stretched them across six miles to raise money and spread awareness about the water crisis in Rwanda. Through the Walk for Water, the eighth-graders raised $1,500 to support the construction of wells in Rwanda.
The eighth-grade students decided to help fight the water crisis in Rwanda after conducting research on the many crises occurring around the world today. After they learned that, on average, children in Rwanda walk six miles a day to collect nine liters of dirty water for their family, and as a result, they are unable to attend school, the Wydown students wanted to help. They opted to create their own walk carrying nine liters of water for six miles to symbolize the plight of their peers in Rwanda.
To make their walk a success, the students designed and mapped the route, ordered supplies, talked to classes throughout the school to gather participation, petitioned the PTO, family and friends for sponsors, and oversaw the event.
The following eighth-graders spearheaded the project:
Jack Castiglione
Sophia Fish
Evelyn Kastner
Rachel Schneider
