Elementary and CHS Students Collaborate in the Name of Science
Captain Elementary students in third through fifth grade and Glenridge Elementary students in second through fifth grade are partnering with Clayton High School students this school year to research and develop science projects for the District’s Science Fair on March 28. Through the Science Project Mentor Club, the students meet with their partners after school nearly every week in the science classroom of their respective elementary schools.
“Getting to do science with high schoolers is good because they have more experience and really help us with our project,” said Glenridge fourth-grader Ruby Nadin.
The elementary students have been meeting with their high school mentors since the fall when they began to develop their science projects. The Captain and Glenridge students brainstormed project ideas based on their own interests, and their CHS mentors, who are enrolled in Advanced Placement science classes, are helping them research their topics and conduct experiments.
“I really like teaching science and introducing science at a young level,” said CHS senior Emily Braverman, who is mentoring groups at Captain and Glenridge this year. “I love science, and I really enjoy seeing younger people develop a love of it, too.”

The Science Project Mentor Club meetings will culminate with the District’s Science Fair held on March 28 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in the Science Wing at Clayton High School. The public is invited to attend and view the projects completed by the District’s elementary and middle school students. In addition, CHS students will host fun, hands-on science activities for the students and their families in attendance.
