Meramec Celebrates African Culture, Famous Individuals
The Meramec Elementary community gathered on Thursday, Feb. 26, for African American History Night, a special celebration highlighting the impact of African culture on the U.S. and the important work of African American individuals throughout history. To prepare for the event, students had the opportunity to research famous African American individuals, create African art inspired by African American artists and learn African drumming.
At African American History Night, attendees took part in a gallery walk to view the student-created African art and listen to speeches prepared by Meramec students dressed as historical figures. The evening’s program followed the gallery walk and included performances by the school’s choir and student drummers. Students, staff and parents also were invited to take part in African dancing with Diádié Bathily, artistic director of St. Louis-based dance company Afriky Lolo.
The event concluded with each student receiving a favorite Meramec take-away – a small sweet potato pie.
